Thank you for joining our inaugural Mass Blindfold Lunch

Saturday 13th October, 2018

Date Saturday 13th October, 2018
Time 12PM - 3PM
Location Ngee Ann Polytechnic Convention Centre

Orbis Singapore held a mass blindfold lunch for over 200 participants to celebrate World Sight Day. Guests were treated to a blindfold lunch, guide dog demonstration, eye screening and games. It was a successful collaboration with several local organisations serving the visually impaired and an educational day out for our supporters.

Guests were blindfolded before walking in groups of 8 to the lunch hall where they had a two-course meal in complete darkness. A Dialogue in the Dark staff and a Guide Dogs Singapore client were assigned to each table and they shared their stories of living with visual impairment with lunch guests.

I was moving very slowly towards the dining table despite having a guide in front of me, and I felt really uncomfortable having to wait till the food is in my mouth before I could figure out what it was. I also found myself raising my voice, because I wasn’t sure if my friend who was facing me knew that I was talking to her.

Congratulations to six lucky guests for bringing home these fantastic prizes:

  • High tea for 2 at COMO Cuisine, COMO Dempsey (3 lucky winners)
  • 30-minute flight simulation for 1 at Flight Experience Singapore
  • Dinner for 2 at The Line, Shangri-La Hotel Singapore
  • Private Dining for 6 by Personal Chef Singapore

Guests were also treated to free eye screening by students and staff of Ngee Ann Polytechnic's Optometry Centre, a guide dog demonstration by Guide Dogs Singapore, fun simulation games and eye care tips by volunteers from Essilor Vision Foundation and a head and shoulders massage by the Singapore Association of the Visually Handicapped.

Essilor Vision Foundation presented our friends from Dialogue in the Dark with sunglasses as tokens of appreciation for their facilitation during the blindfold lunch.

Thank you Dialogue in the Dark Singapore and Essilor Vision Foundation!

It was a fun and educational day out for guests who experienced how it's like to do simple tasks without their sight. Orbis would like to thank all partners, especially Dialogue in the Dark Singapore, for making the event a success.

Thank you Shaun McEwan for being such a wonderful and professional Master of Ceremonies! In 2017, Shaun worked the microphone at over 100 events in 11 countries and is at home hosting Conferences, Product Launch, Award Nights and Black Tie Gala’s.

It is an interesting experience putting myself in the shoes of the blind and thinking how difficult it must be for them. Despite these challenges, I felt inspired by the volunteer at my table, William, and how he shared that we have to believe in ourselves to overcome these difficulties.
